Heirloom seedling sale grows more than just vegetablesSustainable Cherry Hill is partnering with Camden’s The Center for Transformation (CFT) to foster a connection between Camden and its suburbs. One of the ways we are doing this is through an heirloom seed/seedling sale. Suburban gardeners everywhere start dreaming of their summer vegetable gardens in January as they fantasize about which tomatoes, green beans or squash will blossom from their soil come the warm weather. CFT’s urban gardener, Andrea Ferich has put together a program to help gardeners from all over South Jersey to have strong, healthy seedlings to plant in the spring. By letting Andrea know which type of plant YOU are looking to grow, she can order the appropriate seeds, nurture the young seedlings and eventually sell them to you for transplant to your own gardens. Some varieties are sold as seeds. No money is exchanged up front. Your communication with Andrea now helps guide her ordering and growing decisions. Your purchase of the seedlings in the spring helps fund the CFT’s Junior Gardener Program. Kids from the Waterfront South neighborhood of Camden are trained and employed by the CFT and help to care for the gardens, make rain barrels and otherwise learn important vocational and social skills. Click here to start the ordering process. Early variety seedlings can be picked up at Sacred Heart’s Potato Planting Party in March and later varieties will be waiting for you at the Sustainable Cherry Hill Earth Day Festival at Croft Farm on April 24th. For more information, contact Andrea here.

I love this opportunity. I’ve got a small 64 square feet of raised beds. I’ve been planting herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and summer squash, peppers, arugula and a few other odds and ends. I’d buy any of the above seedlings from you and any other things that you recommend as easy to grow. I’ve had collapse of my zukes, squash and cukes each year (I think it’s cucumber beetles) – any suggestions?
The Master Gardeners of Camden County might be able to help you with the problem. They can be reached between 9 AM and Noon, Monday through Friday, at 856-566-2900.
