Rain, Rain… We can catch you!

Jim Wioland, Director of Recreation at Cherry Hill Township participated in our “Make your own Rain Barrel” Workshop on March 6th and took some time to write a web entry about his experience. Mike Haberland from the Rutgers NJ Agricultural Experiment Station ran the workshop, which was co-sponsored by the Cherry Hill Recreation Department. Thank you to Abby Cohler for organizing this event! See Jim’s entry and photo below:

This class was something I had been looking forward to since I saw it in the Township magazine.  I have wanted to make some rain barrels for my yard as a method to help save water and money.  I have been reluctant to try to make these on my own because I am more of a visual learner, I would rather watch a demonstration and recreate than read a set of instructions and try to follow.  Call it intimidation, call it laziness, I would rather have an expert nearby to rely on for questions.  I expected to be taught how to make a rain barrel; however, I did not expect to learn how to utilize these barrels with a rain garden to help fix some drainage problems I am experiencing at my house.  The program started with a highly informative presentation which allowed me to start redesigning in my mind my landscaping which should keep me busy until this fall.  The barrels were extremely easy to make and this workshop has now given me the confidence to make a few more to complete my overflow tanks. Thanks Jim!

If you missed the workshop or just are not the “do it yourself” type, consider purchasing a rain barrel from The Center for Transformation in South Camden.  Andrea Ferich and her junior gardeners make the rain barrels and sell them to the public.  The sale of one barrel allows the center to employ a junior gardener for two weeks.  Contact Andrea at aferich@gmail.com for more information.
