SCH in Action: Update on No Idling/Clean Air Community Initiative

Yesterday, Melinda Dower from the Diesel Risk Reduction Team at NJ Department of Environmental Protection, sat down with members of the SCH No Idling/Clean Air Community Task Force to hear first hand the dangers of vehicle idling.  Representatives from many Cherry Hill stakeholder groups actively participated in the session, which focused on how our community can educate its members  and also how to enforce the law when needed.  Residents Mike Richter and 5th grader, Shelby Robbins got to see first hand how their passion about clean air has become an official community issue.  Specific topics discussed included:  targeting schools through bus companies and PTA’s; how to make community members aware of the reasons behind the law and its implications; specific enforcement issues related to issuing warnings and tickets and engaging the business community.  A meeting is planned for September to continue work on these issues.  Thank you to Melinda for joining us in Cherry Hill.

Present at the meeting and pictured here are:  Melinda Dower from NJDEP, Mike Richter, Mayoral Aide Jen Kelley, CH Township Director of Communications Dan Keashen,  Director of CH Public Works Steve Musilli, CHPD Chief Charlie Jones and his Comminity Outreach partners, Dennis Nelson and Rick McBreany, Chris Dollarton of the CHFD, Shelby Robbins and her mom, Ruth Anne and Susan Manser, CH Zone PTA Liaison.   Photos taken by Lori Braunstein.
SCH and No Idling made the Courier Post today with the article,

CHERRY HILL — A shy 10-year-old Girl Scout who didn’t realize how big an impact she could have and a diligent healthcare worker who wanted his voice to be heard came together to make a difference.

Motivated by a “no idling’ law that had been on the state books for more than two decades, Shelby Robbins and Mike Richter, both of Cherry Hill, had each sought to publicize the risks involved in idling vehicles and were able to do so with the help    of Sustainable Cherry Hill and the township.  Read the full article here.

What should we do when we see people idling their vehicles for a prolonged time? I’ve told some people about the Cherry Hill law, but they don’t seem very impressed. And I can’t bring myself to reporting them. Is there an alternative?
