SCH in Action: YES! Cherry Hill will be a Clean Air Community!

Tonight, I had the privilege of attending the CH Town Council meeting on behalf of SCH, where I witnessed participatory government at its best!  Mayor Platt put forth the No Idling/Clean Air Community Resolution to Town Council as a result of a partnership between CH Township and SCH.  Fifth graders, Shelby Robbins and Brooke Godorov, as well as resident Mike Richter represented SCH by presenting Town Council and the audience with a heartfelt education about clean air and our initiative.  The Mayor made a statement praising SCH’s efforts and offering full support of the No Idling Resolution. I had an opportunity to speak during the “Public Comment” portion of the meeting and used the time for (what else?) a little Sustainability Education and a few words about the No Idling initiative.  The Council Members voted unanimously to pass the resolution and spoke so positively about the passion and commitment to community by Shelby, Brooke, Mike and SCH as a whole.

If anyone is interested in seeing the text of Shelby/Brooke, Mike and my comments, please email me and I’ll send them out.  I was going to post them as part of our community education effort, but I think it would be too lengthy.
What’s next for the No Idling/Clean Air Community Initiative?  SCH will be meeting with the head of transportation for the CH Schools to discuss bus idling, the Zone PTA to address parent’s idling outside of schools and the business/religious community to brainstorm these issues as well.  Cherry Hill Township will be purchasing signs to put around the schools and community to alert drivers about our enforcing of the No Idling Law.  Mike will be bringing down a representative from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection to show us their public education campaign.  This will be followed up by a comprehensive public awareness campaign throughout the community.

Look for a profile article on Shelby, Mike and SCH in the Courier Post in the coming days! As an example of how the efforts of one (or two) small voices can make a difference, Jen Kelley reported that the Township of West Deptford called today after reading the Courier Post preview article and said she heard about what Cherry Hill was doing and wanted information about how they could pass the No idling Resolution in their community!

The West Deptford girl scouts would probably also love to get involved!

Thank you Lori and Mike for all that you are doing to help our community become a healthier and greener place.

Ruth Anne, Maybe Shelby’s troop can partner up with the West Deptford troop and spread the effort! This may be something that the Girl Scout national organization addresses as well! Lori
